On 11 November 2016, Dr Andrew Jackson (Senior Editor) and Ms Ayli Chong (Editor) led an Edanz writing workshop at the Tohoku University Institute for Materials Research, Sendai, Japan.
Both trained English teachers, Dr Jackson and Ms Chong used slide presentations and class writing activities to teach effective academic writing to the 40 PhD students and early-career research staff in materials science. The half-day workshop focused on writing effective titles and abstracts, as well as journal submission cover letters.
On the request of the organizers, the participants were given many opportunities to improve sample sentences about materials science. They were also introduced to communicating materials science to non-academic audiences, to allow post-publication research promotion. After publication, researchers now also need to inform non-scientists and the public about their research findings, so as to raise science awareness and accountability, promote the use of their findings in society, and enhance the reputation of their research group and institution.
Both students and organizers were appreciative of the day's event, and the students were keen to use the free Edanz Journal Selector tool and continue learning about manuscript writing using the free Edanz e-learning course Author Academy.
